Beginning in the nineteenth century, Hungarian artists travelled to Munich and later to Paris to study at their art schools. Hungarian artists received their finest art education by going to major art centers in Europe.

In the mid nineteenth century they studied in the Academy of Munich and Berlin where many times they garnered a multitude of prizes at the annual exhibit. Later in the century, Hungarian artists were more likely to study at the Academy in Paris and acquainted themselves with the current avant-garde such as impressionism, symbolism, and expressionism.

What distinguishes Hungarian artists is that they absorbed the latest styles and techniques but when they went back to their native country they used these tools to paint the native landscape and unique Hungarian subjects.

L&M Art Gallery has an extensive and distinguished collection of Hungarian paintings spanning a century from the mid nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century including genre, landscape, and figurative paintings. Many of the artists are listed in recognized artist dictionaries such as Benezit's. For example, here are some of the artists that are featured in our collection: Komaromi Katz, Edvi Illes Tivadar, Szule Peter, M.C. Pal, Neogradi Antal, Glatz Oszkar, and Fried Pal.
